International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually on March 8 to recognize the achievements of women throughout history and to advocate for gender equality and women’s rights. It is a day of reflection, appreciation, and action to build a more inclusive world.
The Origins of International Women’s Day
The roots of International Women’s Day date back to the early 1900s when women across the world began mobilizing for equal rights. In 1908, thousands of women marched through New York City demanding better wages, voting rights, and fair working conditions. The following year, the United States marked the first National Women’s Day on February 28.
In 1910, during the second International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen, Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of an International Women’s Day to unite the global movement for women’s rights. The proposal was embraced, and the first official International Women’s Day was observed in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland in 1911.
Since then, International Women’s Day has evolved into a global movement, with annual themes advocating for gender equality.
Recent themes include
2024: “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”
2023: “DigitALL”
2022: “Break the Bias”
2021: “Choose to Challenge” and
2020: “Each for Equal”.
Behind every felt slipper, decorative piece, and lifestyle product at Eureka Traders is a skilled woman artisan. These women, many from rural communities, transform raw wool into beautiful, handcrafted products. For them, felt-making is more than just a craft—it is a means of financial independence, empowerment, and preserving a rich cultural heritage.
Felt crafting is an age-old tradition passed from one generation to the next. At Eureka Traders, our artisans—many of whom are mothers and grandmothers—infuse their creativity into each product while honoring the skills taught by their ancestors. Every handmade piece carries a story of resilience, passion, and craftsmanship.
At Eureka Traders, we believe in ethical business practices that uplift communities. By ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions, and skill development opportunities, we help women artisans build sustainable livelihoods. Our eco-friendly felt products not only contribute to environmental conservation but also provide economic stability for these talented women.
While significant progress has been made in gender equality, women worldwide still face challenges such as wage gaps, limited access to education, and workplace discrimination. IWD serves as a reminder that there is still work to be done to create a world where all women have equal opportunities.
This Women’s Day, consider celebrating by supporting women artisans. Whether through fair-trade purchases or advocacy for women’s empowerment, every action counts toward building a more equitable future.
The theme for Women’s History Month 2025 is “Accelerate Action”—a call for meaningful efforts to break barriers and create a world where every woman and girl has equal access to opportunities and success.
At Eureka Traders, we champion this mission by empowering women artisans worldwide. Every handcrafted felt product you choose is more than just a purchase—it’s an investment in the dreams, skills, and financial independence of talented women.
This International Women’s Day, let’s unite to celebrate the strength, creativity, and resilience of women everywhere. Together, we can make a lasting impact.
Happy International Women’s Day!
Support women artisans. Celebrate craftsmanship. Empower change.
